A & G Cafeteria (1968)

A & G Cafeteria 1968, 2627 Canal Street, originally uploaded by regional.modernism.

The first A & G Restaurant in New Orleans opened in 1932 at the intersection of Canal and N. Broad streets. The original restaurant was replaced in 1947 with a new glass and brick building in the streamline moderne style. This building was significantly remodeled by August Perez and Associates and reopened as the A & G Cafeteria on November 21, 1968. The cafeteria has since been razed and replaced by a Rite Aid Pharmacy.

I can't wait to see what you come up with. I remember going to the A&G in Houma in the Southland Mall when I was a kid.

Still doing research on A&G? I keep checking for new posts but haven't found any.

Robbie, Sorry wish I had more time right now to further investigate A&G. But thanks for the prompt!

There were two owners or owner families of A&G Cafeteria, and at least one of them was a member of the Carrollton Avenue Church of Christ where our best friends worshiped. The "G" represented one of the names, that being Gaines, Gainess, or Gainey --- or at least in that "family" of names. Someone at the church should be able to furnish more info on the cafeteria's history. We ate at A&G in the late 1960's when our friends were members of the church there.
